You've seen "organic cotton" on labels, but what does it actually mean — and why does it matter when it comes to the knickers and bras you wear every day?
At Luva Huva, we use GOTS-certified organic cotton across our handmade lingerie. Here's the full story of where it comes from and why we wouldn't use anything else.
What Makes Cotton "Organic"?
Conventional cotton is one of the most chemically intensive crops on the planet, accounting for roughly 16% of global insecticide use despite covering just 2.5% of cultivated land. Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or genetically modified seeds.
Instead, organic farmers use natural methods — crop rotation, beneficial insects, and composting — to maintain soil health and manage pests. The result is cotton that's gentler on ecosystems, on farming communities, and on your skin.
What Is GOTS Certification?
GOTS stands for the Global Organic Textile Standard — the leading international certification for organic fibres in textiles. To carry the GOTS label, a fabric must be:
- Made from at least 95% certified organic natural fibres
- Processed without harmful dyes or finishing chemicals
- Produced under fair labour conditions throughout the supply chain
When you see GOTS-certified on a Luva Huva piece, it means that every step — from field to finished garment — has been independently verified.
Why Organic Cotton Feels Different on Your Skin
Because organic cotton isn't treated with harsh chemical residues, the fibre retains its natural softness. It's breathable, moisture-wicking, and hypoallergenic — exactly what you want next to your most sensitive skin.
It's a particularly good choice for anyone with eczema, allergies, or those who simply prefer knowing what's touching their body all day.
Our Organic Cotton Lingerie
We use GOTS-certified organic cotton in many of our most-loved styles, from our soft knickers to our organic cotton bras. Each piece is made in small batches in our Brighton studio, so nothing sits in a warehouse and very little goes to waste.
